Its Challenge Poverty Week! This is our opportunity to raise awareness of the poverty in our community today, but also recognise the great work that our community organisations do to help those in crisis. Today we’re showing the great work of Furniture Plus
Furniture Plus is the largest furniture re-use, recycling and repair organisation in Fife. Its main aim is to combat poverty and social exclusion, through re-using, recycling and repairing furniture. They have 3 centres in Fife: Dysart, Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath.
Furniture Plus provides good quality, affordable furniture, white goods and household items to those in need, sometimes providing them free of charge.
Last year they helped 2582 low-income families, diverted 500 tonnes from landfill, supported 20 volunteers, provided training and work experience for 70 placements and provided employment for 18 people.
Furniture Plus is a completely self-sustaining charity which does not receive core grant funding to provide the services that it offers, which is why donated items are sold within their shops. All surpluses generated are re-invested into the Charity, with a significant amount set aside each year to provide furniture and other household items free of charge to people in most need.
